Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
Starting off 2018 I decided to finally pick up the Legend trilogy. I instantly fell in love with the way Marie Lu writes and the ease in which I fell in love with her characters and the world she created. I couldn’t get enough of her writing and after devouring the whole trilogy, I picked up Warcross and loved it just as much! I know I have a few more of her books to get into and that makes me so happy to know I have something to look forward to in 2019.
After hearing so many good things about the Illuminae Files, I decided to make it a priority to finally see what all the talk was about. From there I only got a taste of Jay Kristoff and it wasn’t until I read LifeL1k3 that I really got a feel of the way Kristoff writes. I now know that he is one of those authors that I will trust to never let me down. I will instantly buy anything he puts out there its that good. I am so glad I took the time to read some of his writing in 2018.
Okay, I’ll admit that when I got to the end of Red Rising and saw this beautiful man on the back cover flap I may or may not have let out a little gasp at what I had no clue was the brilliant author that wrote such an amazing story. Not only was I in love with his writing, but my gosh is he good looking 😉 Don’t act like you don’t agree!! All goofiness aside, I really enjoyed his writing and I’m definitely looking forward to finishing up the Red Rising series and getting into the second trilogy set in that world.
I wasn’t sure whether to believe all the controversy surrounding The Black Witch books was to be believed or not and because of that I was hesitant to get into them at first. But I am so so so glad that I decided to ignore all the negative comments and give these a shot because my gosh Laurie Forest does not disappoint. I was so in love with the first two books in her series and I honestly can’t wait for the third! The world she has created is so dark and vivid and I was swept away instantly.
Ohhhh how I wish that there was more to the story of Captain Alosa and her fiery, witty temper! I absolutely LOVE the way that Tricia Levenseller writes and her amazing characters that jumped off the page and right into my heart. I felt that at the end of her Daughter of the Pirate King duology all I wanted was more of her writing and these wonderful characters! I found myself laughing and gasping and crying and feeling all sorts of emotions while reading her amazing books. I can’t wait to see what her new book out in 2019 will be like. Its definitely an auto-buy for me!
Amanda Foody should be giving the award for slow burn romance writing. I have never wanted two characters to kiss more than I did while reading Ace of Shades. She was killing me!!! I ended up truly loving the story and her writing in it. I have her other book, Daughter of the Burning City, and have been meaning to read it as well! I have so much to look forward to this year and I’m loving all the anticipated reads to come, especially King of Fools, because I’m still waiting on that kiss!!!
Talk about a one hit wonder! This woman stole my heart with her book Sky in the Deep. I have had a lot of interest in viking stories here lately, from watching the TV show Vikings, to picking up this amazing book, it seems to be a topic I really like here lately. I can only complain that I wanted so much more of her writing once Sky in the Deep regretfully ended. I wished I could just keep turning the page and continue the story for another hundred pages, maybe more. I’m excited to see what her next book will be about and if I’ll love it just the same!
This is another one of those authors where I don’t know what the heck took me so long to finally read her books. Because once I did I was instantly hooked. The Kiss of Deception had me addicted and I ended up flying through her first trilogy just in time for the first of her new series to come out. Dance of Thieves was so good with the same setting as her first books we can jump right back into the beautiful world she has created and fall in love with a whole new cast of characters. I’m ready for more Mary E. Pearson!
Historical Fiction has never been my go to genre, so you can imagine my surprise at how much I LOVED Stalking Jack the Ripper and its following books in the series. The witty banter between the two main characters, and the dark and gloomy and dangerous and spooky settings pull you in to the perfect way that these characters fit into the time era and the settings that they are written in. I love how real they feel with a bit of Sherlock Holmes thrown in the mix and you have a perfect book that can capture the attention and heart of any reader who comes across it. Maniscalco is a fantastic writer and I am all for her books and hope that this series continues on for many more books.
Though she has written some other pretty popular books, The Grim Lovelies was my first Megan Shepherd book and I really enjoyed it. I have yet to read anything else by her but I plan on it this year now that I know how much I like how fun and whimsical her writing is. Her writing took on a fun and lightheartedness that made the journey her characters went on seem like you were there with them, excited for the next turn of evens. I am not sure if all of her writing is like this but I am interested to find out.
Do we have any similar new authors? Who was your top favorite author of 2018? I wanted to add a few other authors to the list, but realized that they weren’t new to me in 2018, yet I still read so many of their books, like Victoria Schwab and Holly Black. I feel like this year will be like that, where I read the continuation of series I fell in love with last year and so a lot of the authors will be ones I already know I like. What do you think your 2019 is going to look like?
