In Happily Inc, love means never having to say “I do”…
Wedding coordinator Renee Grothen isn’t meant for marriage. Those who can, do. Those who can’t, plan. But she never could have planned on gorgeous, talented thriller writer Jasper Dembenski proposing—a fling, that is. Fun without a future. And the attraction between them is too strong for Renee to resist. Now she can have her no-wedding cake…and eat it, too.
After years in the military, Jasper is convinced he’s too damaged for relationships. So a flirtation—and more—with fiery, determined Renee is way too good to pass up…until his flame becomes his muse.
Renee is an expert at averting every crisis. But is she finally ready to leap into the one thing that can never be controlled: love?
Even though I have not read the rest of this series, this book was fine read on its own. It has its own story line and plot that doesn’t leave anything unknown if you haven’t read the other Happily, Inc. books! That being said, it might be nice to read the previous books in the series to find out more about this strange little wedding town and the people living in it. I know usually with series like this, the author gives some fun little references to past characters or story lines for those who have read the series from start to finish. Not to mention that there is also a fun bonus story at the end of this that follows another character that we read about briefly in this book! So lots of fun to be had with the inhabitants of Happily, Inc.!
While I am usually a big fan of the whole romance genre, I will say that this is one of the slower burn romances. It starts out with some good steamy sexy times, but on the whole romance swoony aspect, we are left to wait… and wait… and wait. BUT do not fear, because it wouldn’t be a true Happily, Inc. tale if things didn’t end happily ever after! The characters were your typical male who thinks he can’t be loved, and woman who has given up on love. Even though Renee is a wedding planner, she thinks that love isn’t something to look forward to in her future. And Jasper has seen too much bad to get through his PTSD and find someone who cares for him no matter his flaws. But what they both don’t realize is that they might have found love after all, in each other!
Sounds pretty typical for a love story and it was, but that’s kind of the point with romance, right? You want to know that there is this undeniable pull towards that one special person for you in this world, and that no matter the circumstances, you will find it and it will happen for you. I know that the hopeless romantic in me loved every bit of their denial and refusal to see what was right in front of them. But that’s also what gives us that ever so satisfying slow burn romance that sweeps us off our feet in the end.
This was such a sweet and fun and quirky love story that was unique in its own way enough to keep me interested to the end. I am definitely interested in reading some of Susan Mallery’s other books in this series now that I’ve dipped my toe in the Happily, Inc. waters!
