Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This list is going to include all of those villains that are so dastardly and awful that you can’t help but hate them.
Lord Voldemort – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Need I say more other than we are dealing with “he who must not be named”??? The fact that everyone in these books is so terrified of him coming back that they won’t even speak his name should give you a hint at how truly evil Voldemort is. He’s definitely the first Villain that popped in my mind.
The Commandant – An Ember in the Ashes
She takes an eye for an eye to a whole new level. Speak out of turn and you could lose your tongue if not your head altogether. She brands her slaves, and treats them like dirt on top of stopping at nothing to rule over her army, even if its manipulating her own son.
Colonel Vosch – The 5th Wave
When you’re not sure if the people who are controlling your safety are alien or human, most of the time its best to just play it on the safe side and don’t join any groups that initiate you by having you kill another person right off the bat. Vosch gave me the creeps, and with good reason.
Count Olaf – The Bad Beginning
Olaf being as devious and dastardly as he is, really is actually a hard villian to hate. I actually enjoyed his character in these books and looked forward to what strange disguise he could come up with next. But in the end he still is out to get our poor Baudelaire orphans, and that’s not okay.
Dolores Umbridge – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
I WANTED TO JUMP INTO THIS BOOK AND STRANGLE UMBRIDGE. I mean lets be honest, you wanted her to die so much more than Voldemort! She was such a wicked and evil character. I have never hated a character more! I didn’t think it could get worse, but she proved me wrong page after page after page…! AGH!
Amarantha – A Court of Thorns and Roses
I don’t think it gets more evil than keeping the eye of your conquered enemy in a ring on your hand at all times. Amarantha was a villain that you feared for the characters to cross because she wasn’t above offing anyone who displeased her. I was reading on eggshells every scene that included her and her manipulative ways.
President Snow – The Hunger Games
If sending kids from 12 districts every year to their potential deaths doesn’t scream villain then we might need to have a serious talk, with a therapist. This man had a taste for blood and would do anything to keep from losing his position as president. You don’t cross him without losing something you love in the process.
The King of Adarlan – Throne of Glass
There are a few parts in these books where you realize just how far the King of Adarlan will go to keep anyone from stepping out of line, and it sends shivers down your spine at how purely evil he really is. He cares for nothing but his power over everything and so be it it, even if it means becoming a monster in the process. Because that’s exactly what he is, a monster.
The Komizar – The Heart of Betrayal
I kept thinking that Lia would find a way to soften the Komizar’s heart, but boy was I wrong. He also sent chills down my spine just how dark his heart truly was. He wanted only what could give him power over everything and would stop at nothing to get there.
Goddard – Scythe
And here is another villain where I wanted nothing more than to see him fall down to the deepest, darkest depths of hell. Not unlike his name, he had a god complex that could put the rest of these villains to shame. And then on top of that to give him a scythe robe and the license to kill is really like giving a pyromaniac a box full of matches and just waiting for chaos to ensue.
