Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
I actually read this book twice in 2018. Once when it was published and then again recently because I was in need for a brush up on the details before reading The Wicked King! I think I liked this book a lot better the second time around, obviously since I’m adding it to my favorites list. Holly Black is able to create such a lush world that sucks you in and refuses to let you go until the last page. Both times I read this I flew through hardly able to put it down and even harder to forget!
Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amy Kaufman
I was new to the Illuminae Files game this year but that didn’t deter me from becoming an instant fan. These books, all three of them, were such a unique and amazing reading experience. I loved the different format for reading a story. When I try and desribe these to friends, it doesn’t sound like they would make any sense, but when you read them you see how perfectly it all works out! Loved these!
A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
I first read some of Schwab’s writing last year when I read her Monster’s of Verity duology. I decided right then that she would be an insta buy for me. I was not let down this year as I started to work my way through the rest of her writing. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised to find out that this series would end up being my favorite with all the hype that surrounds it already. It is much deserved hype though because this world and these characters are so perfect and well written that even now I feel like they are only a London away! Definitely one of the best reads of 2018!
Legendary by Stephanie Garber
Caraval was one of my favorites last year so I couldn’t wait to read Legendary. I was curious to see if I would like the side of the story told from Tella’s perspective and was a little hesitant because I was so in love with Julien and Scarlett but Garber has officially now made me a fan of Tella as well! I was so swept away on another adventure in the land of Caraval and all its magical ways. My heart won’t beat again until I get my hands on Finale!! I am looking forward to seeing where this adventure goes from here and hopefully keep this series as one of my favorites!
The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson
I’m not sure why it has taken me until now to finally read this series but I’m kind of glad for the wait. Had I been reading these as they were being published, I don’t know that my heart could have handled the wait between books! I read these back to back to back like one big Kiss of Deception saga that was my life for that bit of time while I was swept away in this world. And I was perfectly happy staying there! These books were so captivating and easy to find yourself lost in this story. I also ended up reading Pearson’s new book this year Dance of Thieves and I’m happy to say that I’m a big Mary E. Pearson fan now!
Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young
Oh my gosh. This book blew me away. I was not expecting it to just capture my heart the way it did, and so quickly! I started this book thinking its rare to find a YA book about vikings, and the synopsis sounded pretty good. Little did I know just how amazing the book in my hands actually was going to be. I loved every bit of this book from the head first jump into action on the first pages to the romance you weren’t expecting to surprises and chaos at every turn. I can’t stress how out of this world this book ended up being for me. I can’t wait to read the next book Young writes!
Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller
Please give me more Alosa! This book made me wish more than ever to have the ability to become best friends with the characters in a book. I could read about Alosa and her shenanigans for the rest of my life and never get tired of her witty dialogue and her fiery personality. I found myself laughing out loud numerous times at the hilarious quips she could come up with on the turn of a dime. She was the perfect image of a daughter of a Pirate King and I think that these books were written so well that my only complaint is that there aren’t more!
Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco
Historical fiction isn’t my usual genre so imagine my surprise when finding that these books are some of my favorites of the year by far! I flew through all three of them in the matter of a couple days. I would have read them in my sleep if I could! This romance is one that caused me physical emotions from tears of happiness to bouts of extreme frustration, my heart strings were being tugged all over the place wanting nothing but the characters in this book than to see what was right in front of their faces. I can’t wait to see what the next book is about. I will be reading it immediately as soon as its published!
The Black Witch by Laurie Forest
I had heard so much controversial things about this book when it was published at first. But after being convinced that it’s nothing like the rumors say, I am so beyond happy I gave it a chance. This is another book that blew me away at how much I loved it and how good it was! I flew through this book and then the next without coming up for air. I couldn’t stop myself from reading it at every spare moment throughout the day, just needing to find out what happens with all these characters that I’d come to love! These are so much more than the rumors give it credit it for and I am a proud fan of this book and the sequel!
LifeL1k3 by Jay Kristoff
Jay Kristoff has become a new insta buy and favorite author for me this year. I’ve had a good run here lately of trying out authors that are said to be good, and finding that I have to agree wholeheartedly! I have so many new favorite authors from this year its going to start to become impossible to read all the new and fun things coming out! I’ll most definitely be reading the next in this series as soon as I can. Lemon Fresh was by far one of my favorite characters from this book and knowing she will be the focus of the second book makes me so so happy! I don’t think that this list could be complete without adding LifeL1k3 to the mix!
Its good to be back!!! I have missed all of the fun book discussions and conversations from Top Ten Tuesday lists! Hopefully you all had an amazing year of reading like I did for 2018!
